Colic - Signs & Symptoms

It can be difficult to tell the difference between a normal babies crying and that of a colicky baby. Colic will typically start when the baby is only a few weeks old and continue until about three months of age. Slightly less than half of colicky babies will continue until up to 6 months of age.

Frequent and prolonged crying episodes.

The colicky baby will cry more that three times a week and the crying can last anywhere from a few minutes at a time to three or more hours. The crying will usually start suddenly and is piercing and irritating.

Painful appearance.

The baby will have a painful appearance with a red face and clenched fists. The baby tends to pull their legs upward to the abdomen which is hard and tight. During this episode the baby can have a bowel movement or pass gas.

No matter how hard you try, it will seem impossible to console your baby.
