Colic - When to call your doctor

While no medication is going to help your baby, there are certain times when you should contact your physician. If the crying is accompanied by diarrhea, vomiting, a fever, blood or mucous in the stools, or other signs of illness call your babies doctor. Also, seek medical care if you suspect the crying is the result of a fall, injury or shaking.

In general, call your doctor if:

  • Your baby does not gain weight.
  • You are concerned about other possible causes of your babies crying.
  • There is diarrhea, vomiting, fever, blood or mucous in the stool.
  • You feel depressed or angry that you cannot stop your babies crying.

Caring for a colicky baby can be very trying and nerve racking. Don’t feel bad if you feel exhausted and frustrated and “just want to get away.” That’s normal. Involve somebody else to help you and give yourself a break from your baby. You can also contact your local health department for local parenting support groups.

NEVER SHAKE YOUR BABY NO MATTER HOW FRUSTRATED OR ANGRY YOU GET. THIS CAN LEAD TO BRAIN DAMAGE.
